01 Is painless laser hair removal right for me?

A physician-supervised option for realistic hair-reduction goals.

Good fit if
You want a physician-supervised, evidence-based approach to hair reduction on the face or body, you have realistic expectations about permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal, and you are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
Not the right fit if
You want a guaranteed number of sessions promised before any skin assessment, or you are looking for a walk-in med-spa package deal rather than a physician-reviewed plan.

02 What painless laser hair removal is at APMUC

Gradual, in-motion energy delivery with contact cooling.

Painless laser hair removal at APMUC uses the Alma Harmony XL Pro’s Super Hair Removal (SHR) applicator, which delivers energy through a series of gradual, lower-fluence pulses while the handpiece glides across the skin instead of firing single high-energy pulses. This in-motion technique builds heat in the hair follicle progressively while a sapphire contact-cooling tip keeps the skin surface temperature controlled, which is why most patients tolerate sessions with little to no discomfort compared with older stamping-mode lasers (APMUC).

This is not a wax appointment and it is not a walk-in med-spa visit. Every protocol is reviewed and supervised by Dr. Saied Shemiranei, medical director and founder. Your skin type, hair type, and medical history are screened before any laser touches your skin, and treatment parameters are set specifically for you rather than a single default setting used on every patient.

Laser hair removal is FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. Permanent hair reduction means a long-term, stable decrease in the number of hairs regrowing in the treated area, measured at 6, 9, and 12 months after a completed treatment series (FDA 510(k) K180353). We will never tell you a session count that guarantees permanent removal, because that is not what the device is cleared to do.

04 Why patients choose APMUC for laser hair removal

Medical oversight, a named platform, and honest expectations.

Physician-led, every session.

Every laser protocol is reviewed and supervised by Dr. Saied Shemiranei, medical director and founder. This is a medical practice, not a med spa.

All skin types, one platform.

The Alma Harmony XL Pro is clinically validated across the full Fitzpatrick scale, from type I through type VI, using the SHR applicator’s In-Motion delivery (APMUC). Many older laser systems are not safe for darker skin tones. We select the applicator and wavelength for your specific skin at every visit.

Honest session-count expectations.

We will not promise a fixed number of sessions before we see your skin and hair pattern in person. Published clinical data shows most patients need roughly 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart for substantial reduction, and hormonally driven hair growth, such as hair related to PCOS, often needs more (Ozuğuz et al., 2012; Mittal et al.). Your plan is built on your response, not a package script.

A real evaluation before you commit.

Your first visit is a free 15-minute phone consultation, followed by an in-person skin and hair assessment and a small test spot before any full-area treatment begins. If laser hair removal is not the right fit for your skin or goals, we will tell you.

05 What your visit looks like

A careful plan before a full treatment area begins.

  1. 01

    Free 15-minute phone consultation.

We discuss your goals, treatment areas, and any medical history that affects candidacy.

  2. 02

    Skin type and hormonal screening.

Your provider evaluates your Fitzpatrick skin type, current medications, and hormonal factors (including PCOS or other androgen-related conditions) that can affect hair growth and session planning.

  3. 03

    Test spot.

A small test area is treated first to confirm safe, effective laser parameters for your specific skin and hair before a full treatment area is started.

  4. 04

    Treatment plan.

Your provider builds a session plan and interval based on your skin type, hair color and thickness, and treatment area, not a generic package.

  5. 05

    Sessions.

Most sessions run in short, defined appointment windows with cooling and In-Motion delivery to maximize comfort throughout.

06 Alma Harmony XL Pro technology

A multi-application platform with an SHR module for hair reduction.

The Alma Harmony XL Pro is a multi-application laser and light platform built on nine FDA-cleared applicators, including the SHR (Super Hair Removal) module used for hair reduction (APMUC).

SHR mode

Delivers hair-reduction energy through multiple lower-fluence pulses as the applicator glides across the skin (In-Motion), rather than one high-energy stamped pulse. This spreads heat delivery over time, which clinical comparisons of SHR-mode IPL versus traditional stamping-mode lasers have studied for hair reduction outcomes (Ozuğuz et al., 2012).

AFT (Advanced Fluorescence Technology)

A filtering technology used elsewhere on the Harmony XL Pro platform, primarily for acne indications, that converts light output into wavelength ranges suited to specific tissue targets.

Fitzpatrick I-VI capability

The platform’s applicators are engineered and clinically validated to be used safely across the full Fitzpatrick skin-type scale, from very light to very dark skin, when the correct applicator and parameters are selected for the patient (APMUC).

Contact cooling

A sapphire-tipped cooling surface keeps the skin surface temperature controlled throughout treatment, which is a major contributor to patient comfort.

07 What to expect over your treatment series

Results build gradually across a treatment series.

Results build gradually across a treatment series rather than after a single session.

Initial sessions

Sessions begin by targeting hairs in an active growth phase.

Build the series

Visible reduction becomes more apparent as you complete a full series.

Personalize follow-up

Results vary by skin type, hair color, and hormonal factors, so follow-up is based on your response.

This session-by-session visual sets expectations without using unrelated-modality photos. Only a verified APMUC patient result with a signed release should ever represent this specific therapy.

08 Benefits and limitations

Comfort-focused hair reduction with honest limits.

Laser hair removal on the Alma Harmony XL Pro can meaningfully reduce unwanted hair growth over a series of sessions, with In-Motion delivery and contact cooling making the process more comfortable than older laser systems. At the same time, results vary by skin type, hair color, treatment area, and hormonal status, and no laser hair removal device is FDA-cleared for permanent hair removal, only permanent hair reduction (FDA 510(k) K180353). Hormonally driven hair, including hair related to PCOS, can regrow or require touch-up sessions even after a completed series (Tan et al., 2024, JAMA Dermatology). Individual results vary, and Dr. Shemiranei will set realistic expectations for your skin and goals during your consultation.

09 Frequently asked questions

Answers before the consultation.

Is laser hair removal safe for all skin types?

Safety depends on selecting the correct applicator and treatment parameters for your specific skin type. The Alma Harmony XL Pro’s SHR applicator is validated for use across the full Fitzpatrick scale, types I through VI, and Dr. Shemiranei’s team performs a test spot before full-area treatment to confirm safe settings for your skin (APMUC).

Does painless laser hair removal actually not hurt?

Most patients describe SHR treatment on the Harmony XL Pro as warm pressure rather than pain, largely because of In-Motion delivery and continuous contact cooling. Comfort varies by treatment area and individual pain tolerance, and some sensitive areas may still involve mild discomfort.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your hair color, thickness, treatment area, and hormonal factors. Published data shows most patients need roughly 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart for substantial reduction, with one study of six consecutive sessions in darker skin phototypes (IV-V) showing the success rate climbing from 5% after 3 sessions to 56% after 6 sessions (Mittal et al.). We do not quote a fixed number before seeing your skin and hair pattern in person.

Is laser hair removal the same as permanent hair removal?

No. The FDA clears laser hair removal devices for permanent hair reduction, defined as a long-term, stable decrease in hair regrowth measured at 6, 9, and 12 months after a completed treatment series, not permanent removal of all hair (FDA 510(k) K180353).

Can I get laser hair removal while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because there is no safety data supporting its use in pregnant patients, and pregnancy hormones also disrupt the hair growth cycle the laser depends on (Trivedi et al., 2017). We screen for pregnancy status at consultation.

Does PCOS or other hormonal conditions affect treatment?

Yes. Hormonal conditions such as PCOS drive ongoing androgen-related hair growth, which typically requires more sessions than non-hormonal hair to reach comparable reduction. A published systematic review of laser and light-based therapies in women with PCOS found meaningful improvement in hirsutism, though study designs varied and more sessions were generally needed than in non-hormonal cases (Tan et al., 2024, JAMA Dermatology). We factor hormonal history into your treatment plan and session expectations.

Is there any downtime?

Most patients return to normal activity the same day. Mild redness in the treated area for a few hours is common and typically resolves quickly.

Who is not a candidate for laser hair removal?

Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active skin infections at the treatment site, have significant recent sun exposure or tanning bed use, are taking certain photosensitizing medications, or have a history of keloid scarring may need to wait or choose a different approach. We screen for these factors during your consultation.

What should I do before and after treatment?

Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds before sessions, and avoid waxing, plucking, or threading the treatment area in the weeks before your appointment since the laser targets the hair follicle. Aftercare typically involves sun protection and avoiding harsh exfoliation for a short period, and your provider will give you specific instructions for your skin and treatment area.
