08 Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a brand name for buprenorphine/naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist that reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing significant euphoria. It’s one of the most effective treatments for opioid use disorder.

Do I have to be in withdrawal to start?

Yes. Suboxone induction must happen after opioids have begun to leave your system – typically 12-24 hours after last use, depending on the substance. Dr. Shemiranei will walk you through timing before your visit.

Is this just trading one addiction for another?

This is a common concern. Buprenorphine is a long-acting, stable medication that prevents withdrawal and cravings. Using it as prescribed is treating a medical condition – the same way insulin treats diabetes. The evidence strongly supports long-term maintenance for most patients.

Can I keep this private from my employer?

Yes. Your medical records are protected by HIPAA. We do not share your treatment with employers, family members, or anyone else without your written authorization.

How long will I be on Suboxone?

There is no universal timeline. Some patients stabilize and taper within a year. Others benefit from long-term maintenance. Dr. Shemiranei will discuss a realistic plan at your intake, with the goal of what works best for your recovery.

Do you treat alcohol use disorder too?

Yes. We offer medication-assisted treatment for alcohol use disorder, including naltrexone, as well as counseling referrals. Call to discuss whether you’re a candidate.

Can I do telehealth for my follow-up visits?

Yes. Once you’ve completed induction and are stable on your dose, monthly maintenance visits can be conducted via telehealth. Your prescription is managed through a licensed pharmacy.

Do you also treat anxiety and depression?

Yes. Co-occurring anxiety and mood disorders are extremely common in patients with opioid use disorder. Dr. Shemiranei addresses these as part of your primary care, not as a separate referral.

What if I relapse?

A relapse does not end your treatment. It’s a medical signal that something in your plan needs adjustment. Call us. We’ll see you the same day if possible and reassess your dose and support structure.
